Portrait view of Bedhug (drum) from Javanese Gamelan

NMM 9882. Bedhug (drum) from a gamelan by Ud
Soepoyo, Surakarta,
Central Java, Indonesia, 1999. Teak with crowned nagas, a royal symbol,
gilded with gold leaf. Water buffalo skin. Commissioned by Margaret Ann

The Museum's Javanese gamelan is the largest and most
complete
set in the Western hemisphere, with both pelog and slendro
tunings.

It was a hot day on July 15, 2000, when Tri Sutrisno
and other
volunteers unpacked the most complete Javanese gamelan outside of Java, 83
instruments carved from teak and gilded with gold leaf by Ud Soepoyo,
Surakarta, Central Java, Indonesia, commissioned with funds given by Mr. &
Mrs. Hubert H. Everist, Sioux City, Iowa, 1999.
