Violin labelled Petroni, ca. 1880-1910
NMM 5583. Violin,
Markneukirchen and/or Schönbach (Luby), Bohemia, ca. 1880-1910. Printed paper label with torn edges and deliberate
abrasions: Giovanni Petroni fecit / Cremonae anno 1817. Top:
two-piece, quarter-cut spruce, medium grain. Back: two-piece, quarter-cut
maple with very faint, medium curl descending slightly from center joint.
Varnish: medium red; heavily shaded; black ink applied over varnish; artificial
antiquing comprised of wear, ink-filled, simulated cracks and dents. Gift
of Mrs. Harry C. Helm, Columbia, Tennessee, 1993.
