|
NMM 10002. Keyed bugle by Charles-Joseph Sax, Brussels, ca. 1840. Built of brass with seven keys, ratchet tuning slide, attachment for a lyre near the bell, and original mouthpiece. Charles-Joseph Sax, the father of Adolphe Sax, was a great instrument builder in his own right, as this instrument demonstrates.

The form-fitted wood case is veneered in dark purpleheart, with stripes, floral decoration, a keyed bugle, a musical lyre, and the words, L. Honbert A Menin, 1842 (presumably the name of the owner, Menin being a small town in west Flanders, some 30 miles south of Bruges), all inlaid with lighter holly wood. André P. Larson Acquisitions Fund and other funds given in memory of Joe R. Utley (1935-2001).
