NMM 12503. Bandura in torban style, Ukraine, ca. 1950. Identity of maker unknown, although attributions to Mykola Diakovsky or Semen Lastovych have been suggested. Thirty-six strings: 14 bass strings (bunty) along neck; 22 treble strings (prystrunky) over soundboard (deka). Chromatic tuning mechanism on soundboard (developed in 1948). This example combines the characteristics of the traditional Ukrainian folk bandura with the older Ukrainian torban, an instrument similar to the European theorbo. However, unlike the theorbo, the treble strings of both the torban and the bandura are aligned over the treble side of the soundboard. The strings are not fingered; each string produces only one note. Paul and Jean Christian Collection, 2006.
