Custom-made for Frederick ("Fritz" or Fred) Geib (1871-1950), who played it for recordings made with Victor Herbert's Orchestra, ca. 1909-1910. Satin-silver plated. Four string-action rotary valves. Gift of Oliver S. Saffir, Palo Alto, California.
NMM 14511. Mouth organ (khene, khaen, khen), Ban Hoi Sai people, Ban Hoi Sai, Laos, 1962. Collected from a local musician in 1962, while the donor and his wife worked at a hospital in Ban Hoi Sai (on the edge of the Mekong River), during the midst of a Laotian civil war. Sent to Laos and India by the Thomas A. Dooley Foundation, the donor and his wife worked at one of three jungle hospitals established in Laos by Dr. Tom Dooley during the 1950s. When asked about his experience, the donor responded, "Needless to say, besides the work, there was little to entertain us except local celebrations. The Khene and other instruments were used and we often danced the Lam Vang, called the Minuet of Asia, moving in double lines with a partner and moving the ams and hands with outstretched and bent fingers." Those who played the Khene, he recalled, "often stood slightly bent over and swayed back and forth as they played. There are, of course, many tales to tell from those months in the jungle with war all around us and managing a hospital with water from the Mekong, generator electricity and a stream of patients with illnesses from the 15th century." L. / LOUIS LOT / PARIS / 6412 / BREVETÉ. Stamped on body, below socket: L. L. / LOUIS LOT / PARIS / BREVETÉ. Silver head joint, body, and foot joint (all joints bearing hallmarks). Seamed tubing. Boehm system with closed G-sharp key and six open finger holes. Played by Victor T. Piltch, Jr., in several studio orchestras in the Los Angeles area, in chamber music groups, recitals, the UCLA orchestra, as well as with the UCLA band at the 1952 Rose Parade in Pasadena, California.
