Description
The Secrets, Lives, and Violins of the Great Cremona Makers, 1505-1744
Minneapolis: Claire Givens Violins, Inc., 2005
The conference, The Secrets, Lives, and Violins of the Great Cremona Makers, was hosted by the National Music Museum in the summer of 2005. It brought together many of the world's leading experts and scholars in the field of violin research and connoisseurship, along with performing musicians and others from the academic world, all of whom had a chance to share their knowledge and expertise in a setting that included many of the earliest, best preserved, and historically important musical instruments known to survive.
This CD features a demonstration of the playing characteristics of NMM 3351, violoncello, The King, by Andrea Amati, Cremona, after 1538, and NMM 10845, a bass viola da gamba by Antonio Stradivari workshop, Cremona, ca. 1730, converted into a violoncello, ca. 1835-1850. Joshua Koestenbaum, associate principal cello of The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, demonstrates and comments upon the playing characteristics of the two Cremonese instruments. Duration: 15:52.
Outside the Gates of Cremona is the topic of a presentation by Duane Rosengard, double-bassist with the Philadelphia Orchestra, also featured on the CD. Using the details of the work and workshops of the circle of Stradivari gleaned from the latest research in the Cremona archives, Rosengard discusses the Rugieri family, Hieronymus Amati II, and Giacomo Gennaro, including surprising information about where they worked. An unedited panel discussion with Robert Bein, James Warren, and Christopher Reuning, as well as an unedited Q & A follow Mr. Rosengard's presentation. Duration: 40:39.
