According to the American Record Guide (2001), "Marie Grandval's mid-19th century sonata, unpublished until 1998, is a Schubertian romp; 'Midsummer Moon' by English composer Rebecca Clarke is a lovely piece of post-impressionism in the manner of Vaughan Williams, with a touch of Debussy; works by Johanna Senfter and Grazyna Bacewicz, from the mid-20th century, have a late-romantic glow. Recent works by Barbara Heller and Serra Miyeun Hwang are emotive and deeply personal; the former, variations on a banned Persian lullaby, memorializes women hostages in Iran in the 80s; the latter is an allegory of the composer's life, a search for stability during turbulent times that is also an apt emblem for the return to tonality."
