Built of boxwood with ivory trim and twelve silver keys, this superb instrument is in pristine condition, complete with original crook and black, leather-covered case, with chamois lining. B. Schott Söhne was established in 1780 in Mainz by Bernhard Schott, a military clarinetist, and is still a famous music publishing company. Mainz is an ancient commercial center on the south bank of the Rhine, where it is joined by the Main River coming from the east, but also remembers its historic cultural ties to the Church and the French-speaking areas to the south. It became an important city for wind-instrument making in the 19th and 20th centuries. Instruments were built by the firm only from 1818 to 1840; but, as this cor anglais demonstrates, the craftsmanship was exceptional. The company opened foreign branches across Europe, including Paris in 1826, which explains the use of the French word, Mayence, rather than Mainz, on the company's stamp, which is branded on all three joints of the instrument.
