Keyed bugle by Charles-Joseph Sax, Brussels, ca. 1840. Built of brass with seven keys, ratchet tuning slide, attachment for a lyre near the bell, and original mouthpiece. Charles-Joseph Sax, the father of Adolphe Sax, was a great instrument builder in his own right, as this instrument demonstrates. The form-fitted wood case is veneered in dark purpleheart, with stripes, floral decoration, a keyed bugle, a musical lyre, and the words, L. Honbert A Menin, 1842 (presumably the name of the owner, Menin being a small town in west Flanders, some 30 miles south of Bruges), all inlaid with lighter holly wood. André P.
