Girls
State 2012
For more than 60 years, the
American Legion Auxiliary has provided citizenship education for
America's female high school juniors. A few hundred girls were served
during the early years; now about 20,000 participate annually, bringing
our total program participation to nearly a million.
The South Dakota
American Legion Auxiliary Girls State program is about to grow and
achieve great things during the
2012 Girls State session.
Things to look for include:

Since the addition of the
Webcam, South Dakota Girls State has added a new position to
Journalism City. Girls State we will continue to have our
very own Webmaster. |

Journalism City will be in
the Al Neuharth Media Center where the girls work with the USD
Volante director to put together our paper, the Sacajawea Scroll
everyday. |
 |
All general assemblies will
be open to the public. |
 |
A memorial service will be
held following the opening session on Monday evening. |
 |
Additional speakers and
emphases on patriotism and flag etiquette. |
 |
ROTC cadets will be
conducting morning exercise and running sessions for those who
wish to participate. |
 |
The Girls State Chorus will
present a concert on Friday evening prior to inauguration. |
 |
Volunteers from the American
Legion Auxiliary units will host a reception following the
inauguration. |
 |
The USD Law School and area
attorneys and judges will be responsible for the legal portion
of the session and the USD Criminal Justice Program along
with local law enforcement personnel will work with the law
enforcement session. |

Local and governmental
officials will mentor the city, county, House, and Senate
assemblies as well as the Citizens Forum. |

The Department of Political
Science and the Farber Center will jointly offer an optional
course worth 1-2 hours of college credit transferable to any
college in the nation. Participants will have to keep a journal
of their experiences during Girls State and complete some
associated reading within two weeks of finishing the conference. |

In addition to the current
scholarships offered by all the State colleges and universities,
the USD Farber Fund will award two $500 scholarships to the
Governor and Lieutenant Governor, respectively. The scholarships
are redeemable if the students attend USD and major in Political
Science. |
