This class introduced students to the application of fixed (Halstead-Reitan and Luria-Nebraska) and flexible neuropsychological assessment batteries, integration of test data in interpretation, identification of malingering, clinical neuroanatomy, and development of rehabilitation plans.

Title: Development of a Tactile-Directional Analog Block Design Test for the Visually-Impaired.

This project encompasses pre-pilot work in the development of a proposed haptic test of spatial and constructional ability for the visually-impaired.  Both individual differences between examinees - including cultural differences -  and stimulus characteristics are explored.

Title: Developing a Measure of Nonverbal Intelligence for the Visually-Impaired: The Three-Dimensional Haptic Matrices.

This study employed a divergent-convergent validation of a proposed haptic test similar to Ravens Progressive Matrices, using a population of participants with various degrees of visual impairment.  Project required coordination with various state agencies and organizations for the blind and visually-impaired.

QUALIITATIVE ITEM ANALYSIS TEAM

Project was re-analysis of data used in the MA thesis project.  Organized two hours of weekly collaboration with four other graduate students to produce a grounded-theory model and analysis of visually-impaired examinees’ metacognitive report of problem-solving strategy with a haptic test of nonverbal cognitive ability.

Title:  Assessor Satisfaction with Measures of Cognitive Ability as Applied to Persons with Visual Impairments.

This study surveyed assessment professionals from state schools for the blind in the US.  Assessors reported the type and number of verbal and nonverbal cognitive instruments used to assess their clients in the past 12 months, and their level of satisfaction with each instrument.

NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH PREDOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP (EY06958-01)                                

Three-year funding (approximately $50,000 total) through the National Eye Institute of the National Institutes of Health. The funding supports a two-part thesis and dissertation research project investigating the feasibility of developing new cognitive, neuropsychological, and psychoeducational tests (3-DHM and T-DABDT) for the visually impaired.  Other research, related to assessment in general, and assessment of the visually-impaired in particular, have also been supported by this fellowship.

One-time $500 award in support of a pilot study testing the feasibility of using fantasy role-playing characters as indicators of personality variables in adolescents.  Correlations between imagined characters’ attributes and MMPI-2 clinical scales are analyzed.
